The Zen of Data Processing

1. Every business needs a database.

2. Every business needs its OWN database.

3. A loosely organized collection of privately maintained
spreadsheets is not a database.

4. But a unified database is the single source of truth.

5. A database is a window into the business:

If you can see it, you can move it.
If you can move it, you can manage it.

6. A good database is a living breathing malleable thing.

7. Because the business is always a moving target.

8. “A computer is a communication device, first, second and third.”
(Alan Kay, 1968)

9. And so, the database is the central nervous system of the business.

10. Perfection of the database, in both form and content,
is always sought but rarely achieved. Never stop trying.
